Vote Early to Avoid Election Day Lines

If you haven't already made plans to vote early, please do so. They
expect tremendous lines on Election Day, but the more people vote
early, the shorter those lines will be. There is fear among the Obama
campaign that on Election Day, a lot of new voters will decide NOT vote
and just leave the polls if they deem that the lines are too long.
That's something we definitely don't want to see this year.

You can vote early at your County Clerk's office. Call your County Clerk in advance for voting hours. Barack Obama's website also has information, broken down by state, about voting, and voting early. Information about Indiana can be found here:

http://www.barackobama.com/voters/stateinfo.php?state=in

Indiana Senate District 33 race

From our friend, Linda Perdue:

With the retirement of Senator Glenn Howard, a long-time friend of our community, Senate District 33 seat is open. There are 3 contenders for the seat. I would ask you to consider voting for Greg Taylor. www.gregtaylorforsenate.com

I have served on the city's Equal Opportunity Board with Greg for years. Although he wasn't on the committee that rewrote the Human Rights ordinance, (he's on the contract compliance committee) Greg was a vocal supporter of the HRO. He lobbied counselors for their vote, and was a strong supporter across the board. In addition, Greg has pledged his support for updating the State Civil Rights Code to incude us, and is a long-time supporter of updating the hate crimes laws in this state.

As you know, candidates are listed alphabetically. Greg will be at the bottom of the list on the Democratic ticket for District 33. A vote for him is greatly appreciated. He is our friend!

Dining Out For Life, Thursday April 24

Don't forget that Thursday is the day for Indianapolis' annual Dining Out For Life, an event during which many restaurants around the city donate a portion of their earnings to the Damien Center, to benefit hundreds of people living with HIV & AIDS throughout Indiana.

You can find the complete list of participating restaurants here, at http://diningoutforlife.com/indianapolis/participating. The restaurants are broken down by location and by the meal times during which proceeds will be donated.

There's a long list of great restaurants participating, but note that Cafe Patachou, Adobo Grill, and Blu Martini are the only three restaurants donating 50% of their proceeds on Thursday, and (if you want to have a cocktail with dinner) note that Agio is the only restaurant that is believed to be donating liquor sales as well as food sales to the Damien Center.

So help fight HIV/AIDS and have a great meal on Thursday!

Terry Michael Deserves Our Support

From Gary Welsh at Advance Indiana (http://advanceindiana.blogspot.com/):

Terry Michael hopes to replay the success younger candidates have had in recent elections in unseating older, long-serving members of the Indiana State Senate. Unlike Brent Waltz, Jeff Drozda and Greg Walker, Michael is not relying on the religious right and their hot button social issues to galvanize support. When the two term, Fall Creek Township Trustee filed to run against Sen. Beverly Gard in Senate District 28, Senate Republicans assumed he was recruited to run against Gard by Eric Miller. Michael is anything but a candidate who Eric Miller and the religious right would back. He is the only openly gay, elected Republican official in the state of Indiana and he opposes Milller's efforts to enact a constitutional amendment barring the legal recognition of same-sex marriages or any other similar rights for unmarried couples, straight or gay.

Gard, 64, has served in the Senate for the past 20 years and chairs the Energy and Environmental Affairs Committee. Gard worked for Eli Lilly as a biochemist for a few years back in the 1960s before taking early retirement to raise a family. In one of her first joint appearances with Michael, Gard was quick to take issue with Michael's same-sex family, making clear that a family could only be headed by one man and one woman in explaining her support for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Michael, who worked as a minister for 20 years and is in a long-term same-sex relationship, opposes a constitutional amendment defining marriage, preferring government take a neutral position on the issue. He also supports human rights laws which protect gays and lesbians from discrimination, which Gard steadfastly opposes.

While Michael's campaign is not well-funded like Gard's, his candidacy cannot be easily dismissed. He is no stranger to the residents of Gard's Senate district. He is in his second term as Fall Creek Township Trustee in Hamilton County. His township is the population center of District 28, with nearly one-third of the voters residing there. He says he has been getting a lot of encouragement in his bid and has a lot of grassroots support. In his campaign, Michael has been critical of Gard's lack of leadership as chairperson of the Senate committee which writes our environmental laws in providing for more regulation of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Indiana has some of the weakest laws in the country Michael complains, endangering our environment. He also faults Gard for pushing expanded ethanol production in the state over other less costly alternative fuels. "Gard's answer to everything is that Indiana is an industrial state," Michael says. That means we should build more CAFOs and more ethanol plants in her mind without regard to the long-term impact on our state Michael says.

Property taxes have been a big issue this year in the legislature, but Michael, who also works as an assessment official in his township, takes a different view on property tax reform than many Republican legislators took this past session, including Gard, who supported Gov. Daniels' property tax reform plan as provided in HB 1001. He is concerned about the impact of shifting taxes to businesses and farmland through the graduated 1-2-3 caps. He is concerned about the loss of federal tax deductions for individual homeowners if they are paying higher sales taxes as a trade off for lower property taxes. He is particularly concerned about making the tax caps a permanent part of our state constitution. He notes that even Sen. Gard has backed off her support for making the tax caps permanent during the campaign, now saying it needs further study.

Michael believes Gard has been inattentive to the voters in the district. "I am committed to bringing energy and two-communication back to Senate District 28," he says. "The voters deserve open government and the opportunity to express their concerns and be listened to, not just heard." He's an unconventional Republican candidate with an unconventional Republican message. The Senate Republican caucus could certainly benefit from having a voice of moderation like his within its ranks.
